Hangul syllable aeg

6498/11172

액 has no single meaning by itself: 액체 means “liquid,” 액자 “picture frame,” and 액운 “misfortune.” The bad-luck sense has an older spelling and a ritual history in 액막이, a practice for sending misfortune away.

What 액 means

It depends on the Korean word around it.

액체 means “liquid,” 액자 “picture frame,” and 액운 “misfortune”; they are separate words.

Hangul combines consonant and vowel letters into syllable blocks such as 액.

The bad-luck sense has a longer history

The older spelling  appears in a 1576 record; a 1903 text has 액.

In Joseon-era records, 액막이 included kite-flying and other rites to send 厄 (misfortune) away. Hanja are Chinese characters used in Korean; 厄 is the character behind this bad-luck sense.

In older Korean usage, 애꿎다 developed through 궂다: “bad fortune” shifted toward “unfairly blamed,” then “unrelated.”

1

Why does 액 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
