Hangul syllable aelg

What 앩 means

Switch to Korean 2-set input and press D-O-F-R. With the common QWERTY layout, those keys enter ㅇ, ㅐ, ㄹ, and ㄱ; the input method editor (IME) joins ㄹ and ㄱ into the two-consonant ending ㄺ.

What does 앩 mean?

앩 is a Korean syllable block; its role comes from the word around it. It combines initial ㅇ, vowel ㅐ, and final cluster ㄺ, a two-consonant ending. Those components form one written syllable; the surrounding Korean word supplies its reading and meaning.

Hangul's creation was recorded in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new writing system, was published in 1446. Hangul was designed to represent Korean speech with a script intended to be easier for ordinary learners than reliance on Chinese characters.

Why does 앩 sometimes split into separate letters?

It can appear as a block or as position-specific letters. Unicode canonically relates 앩 to the conjoining-jamo sequence 앩, whose letters are shaped for initial, vowel, and final positions. An input flow may instead show compatibility jamo ㅇㅐㄹㄱ before joining them. These are different displays of the same spelling.

Neutral and technical; it belongs in Korean text, language study, or keyboard tests.

Alone, it may look like a stray syllable; ask for the surrounding word if meaning matters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 앩 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
