What 앒 means
It meant “front” in Middle Korean, an older Korean stage.
A transcription from Baekje, an early Korean kingdom, records the older word for “front”; 15th-century Hangul writes it as 앒. Hangul was created in 1443; its explanatory text, Hunminjeongeum, appeared in 1446. 앒 combines initial ㅇ, vowel ㅏ, and final cluster ㄿ.
Is 앒 the old form of 앞, or a typo?
It is an older form of 앞; modern context can make it a typo.
Use 앞 for modern Korean “front”; reserve 앒 for historical quotations. Their finals differ: ㄿ in 앒, ㅍ in 앞.

1Why does 앒 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
