What 밷 means
The word around it supplies its meaning. The block joins ㅂ (starting consonant), ㅐ (vowel), and ㄷ (ending consonant).
뱉다 (“to spit”) is spelled with ㅌ, though [밷ː따] is its standard pronunciation: lengthen the first syllable, then start the next with a tense “t” sound.
Why does Hangul use syllable blocks?
Each block gathers the letters of one spoken Korean syllable.
King Sejong devised Hangul for Korean speech. Records call it Hunminjeongeum in 1443; its explanatory book appeared in 1446. Korean texts mixed Hangul and Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), a practice that changed during the 20th century.
