What 밸 means
밸 is a short form of 배알, a word for intestines. In everyday Korean it can also mean guts, nerve, temper, or self-respect; it is blunt and colloquial, not a neutral anatomy term.
밸도 없다 criticizes someone for lacking guts or self-respect. 밸이 꼬이다 describes irritation or offense, with the image of insides twisting.
A Korean usage column from 2017 points to 월인석보, a Korean Buddhist book printed about a decade after Hangeul's creation, as early evidence for the longer form 배알.
Why does 밸 sound blunt?
It is a rough, colloquial word for guts. In a formal message, use 밸 only when quoting or explaining the word; aimed at a person, it can sound coarse.
Hangeul was created in 1443, and the explanatory Hunminjeongeum guide was completed in 1446. A Hangul syllable block joins an opening consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant; 밸 is shown as ㅂ + ㅐ + ㄹ. Hangeul was designed to let people learn to read and write Korean without relying on Chinese-character literacy.
What does 밸 mean when someone sends it?
A lone 밸 gives too little context to tell what it means. It is one syllable, so look at the word or sentence around it.
The phrases carry different readings: 밸도 없다 is a jab at someone's nerve or self-respect; 밸이 꼬이다 means irritation or offense.
A 2017 Korean usage column reports that North Korean speech can also use 밸 literally for fish entrails, while South Korean explanations foreground the figurative idioms. Treat this as a reported regional distinction, not a meaning to assume in every conversation.

벨 is a different word: it means “bell.”

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
