What 반 means
The surrounding word decides which meaning you are reading. 반반 means “half-and-half,” 반장 is a class leader, and 반대 means opposition or the opposite. The roots are 半 (“half”), 班 (“class/group”), and 反 (“opposition”).
Hangul was created under King Sejong in 1443 to make Korean easier to write; the explanatory work Hunminjeongeum appeared in 1446. Those dates mark the script’s history, not the first use of 반.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 반 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
