What 뽈 means
It has no fixed meaning alone; the surrounding Korean word decides. As a regional form of 볼 and 뺨, meaning “cheek,” 뽈 appears in southeastern Korean speech and writing. A 2022 regional survey records 뽈살 for “cheek” in Changwon and 뽈 for “cheek” in Gyeongju.
Hangul itself is not a new code invention. It was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 as a practical way to write Korean, so the computer encoding date is filing, not birth.
When does 뽈 mean fish cheek?
In food compounds, 뽈 points to cheek meat, not a reaction. A 2014 food report explains 대구뽈찜 as a regional name for a fish-cheek dish, while a recipe labels the ingredient 대구 뽈 and the cooked meat 대구뽈살.
Place and convention change the reading. A 1995 language reference gives 뽈 as the North Korean spelling of the English loanword “ball,” where South Korean text uses 볼.
Why does 뽈 look different?
Fonts can change its shape or fail to show it. Unicode 17.0 treats reference glyphs as non-prescriptive, and a font without Korean support may substitute a box or fallback. That is rendering, not alternate emoji art.
Is 뽈 an emoji? No: it is a Korean syllable whose meaning depends on the surrounding word.
