Hangul syllable Bub

4498/11172

붑 has no fixed meaning by itself: it is a Hangul syllable whose sound contributes to a Korean word. On a two-set Korean keyboard it can briefly appear while typing 부부; an older form of the word 북메우다, meaning “to make a drum by covering it,” is 붑메우다.

What 붑 means

No fixed meaning on its own.

붑 is one syllable block in Hangul, the writing system used for Korean. It contributes a syllable sound, while the surrounding word supplies the meaning. Hangul was designed under King Sejong to represent Korean speech and make writing easier for his subjects. Its earliest record appears in the Sejong annals, a court chronicle, in 1443. Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new script, followed in 1446.

Before Hangul, Korean writers adapted Chinese characters through older writing practices called Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol; these are earlier ways to write Korean, not alternate forms of 붑. The script also went by names including jeongeum (정음), eonmun (언문), gukmun (국문), and gukseo (국서) before Hangeul (한글) became widely used as its name in 1928. A 1527 Korean learning text, 훈몽자회, records 붑메우다, an older form of 북메우다, “to make a drum by covering it.” Here 붑 is part of a word, not a standalone sign for a drum.

What does 붑 mean when someone sends it?

No settled reaction meaning by itself.

As of September 2026, no stable standalone chat use is established for 붑 in Korean. If it arrives alone, treat it as unclear: it may be unfinished or accidental, but the character alone does not reveal which. Ask what the sender meant before assigning it a mood.

Why does 붑 appear while typing 부부?

It can be a temporary Korean keyboard state.

A 2007 explanation of the standard two-set Korean keyboard, where consonant and vowel keys are separate, shows ㅂ → 부 → 붑 → 부부. While typing 부부, the first consonant after 부 temporarily attaches as its final consonant; the next vowel moves it to the start of the following syllable. 붑 is an intermediate composition, not extra text.

To type 붑 intentionally, enter ㅂ, ㅜ, then ㅂ. If you meant 부부, enter ㅜ after 붑 so the keyboard finishes the next syllable.

Neutral as Korean text; alone in a chat, it can look unfinished or intentionally odd.

A lone 붑 is unclear; ask before reading a mood into it.

Why does 붑 appear as a box on my screen?

The font displaying the page may lack this Hangul glyph. A placeholder box points to a display-font gap; it does not mean the character changed.
