What 불 means
Usually “fire”; compounds decide the rest. Alone 불 means fire, a fire emergency, light, or passion. 불이 붙었어 means a fight or feeling has caught fire figuratively.
The word predates Hangul: in 1103–4 a Chinese glossary wrote native pul “fire” with 孛, and 火 covered the same sound. The fifteenth-century spelling was 블. Hangul spells sounds, so 불 is not a flame picture.
