What 붉 means
It is the color stem behind 붉다, meaning “to be red.” It usually appears as 붉은 before a noun, rather than by itself.
붉은 can sound more descriptive or literary than everyday 빨간, the form of 빨갛다 used before a noun. It fits scenery such as sunsets and autumn leaves, as well as visible redness in skin or eyes.
An earlier form, 븕다, is recorded in 1447 in the Korean verse work 용비어천가 (“Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven”). 붉다 is thought to be linked to 불 (“fire”); related 밝다 (“to be bright”) has a different vowel. Hangul, the Korean writing system, was devised in the 15th century to make writing Korean easier than by adapting Chinese characters.

1Why does 붉 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
