What 챕 means
챕 has a sound, but no fixed meaning on its own.
It combines initial ㅊ, vowel ㅐ and final ㅂ. The final consonant, called batchim, closes the syllable with a short, unreleased p-like sound. Revised Romanization writes the syllable chaep; caeb is Unicode’s component-based lookup label, not a pronunciation guide.
Why is 챕 written as one block?
Hangul groups consonants and vowels into syllable blocks.
Before Hangul, Koreans adapted Chinese characters to write their language through systems such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal. King Sejong created the new script, first called Hunminjeongeum, in 1443; a book with that title explained its principles in 1446.
Hangul spread through Buddhist texts and practical books. It became Joseon’s official script in 1894, lost national status under Japanese rule in 1910, and entered language-recovery policy after liberation in 1945. As of 2026, one Korean riding retailer uses 챕 as a category label for riding chaps.
Neutral: 챕 is a written syllable whose reading depends on its Korean word and sound context.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
