What 찰 means

It marks glutinous texture, with a few extensions. In compounds, 찰- marks sticky or chewy foods and materials: 찰밥 (glutinous rice) and 찰흙 (clay). 찰벼 is a glutinous-rice plant; 찹쌀 is rice from it, contrasted with 멥쌀, non-glutinous rice. In 찰가난, 찰- intensifies a negative noun to mean extreme poverty.

찰지다 can also describe speech or action as vivid and satisfying. An older form, 디다, is attested in the 18th century; 찰지다 appears in the 19th century, while 차지다 continues from the 20th century onward. In 2015, 찰지다 became standard alongside 차지다.
