What 찮 means
It has no fixed standalone meaning.
In 괜찮다, the full word can mean “fairly good,” “not a problem,” or “permitted”; 괜찮아 and 괜찮아요 are conversational forms.
Why was Hangul made?
To write Korean speech more directly.
Chinese characters did not match Korean speech; the creation is recorded in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum Haerye explained the system in 1446.
Before Hangul, Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol were related Chinese-character writing practices, not visual ancestors of 찮.
How is 찮 assembled?
A Korean IME builds the block from its component letters.
Enter ㅊ, ㅏ, ㄴ, then ㅎ; the final pair becomes ㄶ.
Fonts draw the result as one square block; decomposed and precomposed text can compare differently until normalized.

Questions people ask
1Why does 찮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
