What 찭 means
Use Korean 2-set input: type cksw.
With the keyboard set to Korean, those QWERTY keys enter ㅊ, ㅏ, ㄴ, and ㅈ; the last pair joins as the compound final ㄵ. If the input method is unavailable, an app that accepts conjoining Jamo—the building blocks of Hangul—can take ᄎ ᅡ ᆬ.
Hangul font differences can change the parts’ shape, size, spacing, or placement; the encoded character stays 찭.
What does 찭 mean by itself?
By itself, 찭 is a Hangul syllable, not a complete word.
Its components are initial ᄎ, vowel ᅡ, and final ᆬ (ㄵ), a two-consonant final. “Canj” is a Unicode label built from the components, not a Korean word for the block.
In a Korean word, the surrounding spelling and pronunciation tell you how the syllable is read. Alone, 찭 does not identify a word or a message.
Why does Hangul include this block?
It follows Hangul’s system for encoding syllable blocks.
Records place Hangul’s creation in 1443 as a writing system suited to Korean speech. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript, a guide to the new system, explains the letters and how initials, vowels, and finals join in blocks.
Unicode’s modern Hangul-syllable set was drawn from the Johab repertoire in Korea’s KS C 5601-1992 standard. The 1996 date marks computer encoding, not Hangul’s origin. The script’s common name shifted toward “Hangeul” in the early 20th century.
Technical and neutral: 찭 is literal Korean text in a syllable block.

1Why does 찭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
