What 찻 means
On its own, 찻 contributes a syllable, not a word meaning. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, pairs consonants and vowels in square blocks, as in 찻집 (“tea shop”) and 찻값 (“tea price”). Its block system is documented from 1443–1446; the layout is linked to Chinese-character design.
Why is 찻 written in 찻잔?
It joins 차 (“tea”) and 잔 (“cup”). 잔 comes from Chinese-derived Korean vocabulary. The final ㅅ, called 사이시옷, is inserted in some compounds. 찻잔 is pronounced [차짠] or [찯짠]: one reading strengthens the next consonant; the other has a brief t-like stop first.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
