What 치 means
치 has no single fixed meaning by itself. In Korean it appears in 치아 (“tooth”), 최대치 (“maximum value”), and 염치 (“a sense of shame or decency”). Those meanings belong to the whole words, not to this syllable alone. If a message contains only 치, the conversation may help explain why it was sent, but the glyph does not identify one word.
Hangul was created in 1443 to write Korean more directly than Chinese characters allowed. Its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음, “Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People”), appeared in 1446. Earlier systems—Idu (이두), Gugyeol (구결), and Hyangchal (향찰)—adapted Chinese characters for Korean and were difficult to use. Hangul later appeared in Buddhist, Confucian, and practical texts before gaining official national status in 1894.
Why is 치 written as one block?
It combines ㅊ, a consonant letter, and ㅣ, a vowel letter. Hangul calls these component letters jamo and groups them into syllable blocks. A Korean input method assembles them as you type.
A different font can change 치’s strokes or proportions, but it remains the same Hangul syllable.

1Why does 치 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
