What 쵳 means
It writes one Korean syllable; the surrounding word supplies meaning.
Hangul builds syllables by joining consonant and vowel letters inside one block. 쵳 is composed of ᄎ at the start, ᅬ in the middle, and ᆾ at the end.
Why did Hangul use syllable blocks?
They organize Korean consonants and vowels into readable syllables.
King Sejong’s court devised Hangul so Korean could be written directly; Chinese characters did not map neatly to Korean speech. A record from 1443 calls the script 훈민정음 (“Correct sounds for teaching the people”). The 1446 manual 훈민정음 해례본 explains its letters and design.
Other Korean names included 정음, 언문, 반절, 국문, and 국서. The name 한글 appears in the early 1910s and was widely used in 1928. Scholars have proposed that Hangul drew on Phags-pa, a square script created for the Mongol Empire; the extent of that influence is debated.

1Why does 쵳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
