What 쵝 means
In 쵝오, 쵝 means “the best.”
The standard form is 최고. In 쵝오, the final ㄱ of 고 moves to the preceding block, while 오 begins with ㅇ; the change makes the praise deliberately playful. A 2025 Korean product review uses 쵝오 beside standard praise.
Is 쵝 a typo?
In 쵝오, it is deliberate wordplay; alone, it may be a typo.
Use 최고 for neutral or formal Korean; 쵝오 is casual, nonstandard praise. A 2013 analysis by Korea’s National Institute of Korean Language describes spellings like this as playful changes that add emotional nuance, especially among younger users.
Where does 쵝 come from?
쵝 is a Hangul syllable block made from letters.
Hangul was created in 1443 and explained in Hunminjeongeum, a guide published in 1446. It was designed to make Korean easier to write for people with less access to education in Chinese characters. Hangul letters combine into blocks for syllables; ㅊ, ㅗ, ㅣ and ㄱ form 쵝.
In 1989, a National Institute of Korean Language list recorded 쵝 in 촉쵝이, a dialectal, nonstandard counterpart of 촉촉이. A 2008 analysis of Korean IRC (real-time internet chat) logs counted 쵝 1,041 times among 54,723,296 Hangul characters and classified it as an independent form of internet language.
Playful, informal wordplay; it signals deliberate Korean spelling play rather than neutral writing.
For neutral or formal Korean, write 최고; 쵝오 sounds playful and nonstandard.

1Can 쵝 by itself mean “the best”?
No. The clear praise expression is 쵝오, a playful reshaping of 최고; by itself, 쵝 does not spell the whole expression.
