What 촛 means
It is the compound form of 초 (“candle”). In 촛불 and 촛대, ㅅ is 사이시옷, a written marker used in some Korean compounds. In 촛불, it marks a tense start to 불 rather than a separate s sound between the words. Standard Korean allows [초뿔] or [촏뿔]: both have a tight p sound at the start of 불, while the second also has a brief t-like stop.
Hangul, the Korean writing system, was devised under King Sejong in 1443; the 1446 guide 훈민정음 introduced it. Each syllable block combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant. Unicode NFD normalization, a text-processing step, can split 촛 into its three letter parts: ᄎ ᅩ ᆺ. The spelling marker has a stop-start history: a 1946 revision removed 사이ㅅ; the standard issued in 1988 and in force from 1989 restored it.
South Korean candlelight protests gave the literal candlelight a civic reading: protest use is documented in 1992. Vigils in 2002 for two girls killed by a U.S. military vehicle helped make candlelight iconic in peaceful public demonstrations.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 촛 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
