What 췜 means
It writes one Korean syllable; it is not a pictogram.
Hangul is the Korean alphabet. It arranges letters called jamo into syllable blocks. In this block, the initial consonant is ㅊ, the vowel is ㅞ, and the final consonant is ㅁ; read the surrounding word for its meaning.
Unicode can also store the same syllable as three jamo, 췜, instead of the precomposed block 췜. It is the same syllable in a decomposed form.
How do I type 췜?
On the common 2-set Korean keyboard, enter cnpa.
With Korean input active, c, n, p, and a produce ㅊ, ㅜ, ㅔ, and ㅁ; the input method combines ㅜ ㅔ into ㅞ and assembles the block. The keys vary on other Korean layouts.
How did Hangul take shape?
King Sejong's court created Hangul in 1443 for writing Korean. At the time, Chinese characters were used to write Korean despite the languages' differences. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum—a book about the new alphabet—explained its purpose and design.
During Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945), Hangul use faced suppression, but study, teaching, and publication continued. After 1945, Hangul became a foundation of Korean culture.
Some scholars connect a few Hangul letter shapes to Phags-pa, a phonetic script commissioned for the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty and used in official documents from 1269. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum explains Hangul's design principles; the proposed influence remains disputed.
