What 츼 means
It contributes one syllable to a Korean word.
King Sejong's court devised Hangul so Koreans could write without first learning Chinese characters. The Sejong Sillok, a royal chronicle, records its creation in the twelfth lunar month of 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum guide explains the script.
Earlier methods—idu, hyangchal, and gugyeol—used Chinese characters to write Korean; Silla evidence for idu reaches the mid-sixth century. Hangul became Korea's standard writing system. Japanese colonial rule suppressed Korean-language schooling; it resumed after Korea's liberation.
