What 칈 means
It marks a Korean syllable; the block alone does not give a word's meaning. Hangul combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant cluster (two consonant letters) in one square block. 칈 has ㅊ first, ㅣ as its vowel, and ㄽ at the bottom. Those parts show its spelling, not a word-level definition.
Hangul was designed as a practical way to write Korean speech by sound. Its development was completed in 1443, and the Hunminjeongeum manuscript records the system in 1446. These dates belong to the writing system, not this individual syllable. Digital text can store a syllable already composed or as separate jamo (component letters) that a font arranges into one cell.
