What 댘 means
It spells one Korean syllable; the word around it gives meaning.
Hangul is the Korean alphabet; its letters group into one block per syllable. In 댘, consonant ㄷ starts the block, vowel ㅐ sits in the middle, and consonant ㅋ closes it.
Why was Hangul created?
To write Korean more directly in a system built for its sounds.
Hangul was devised under King Sejong in 1443, when formal Korean writing relied heavily on Chinese characters. The book Hunminjeongeum, published in 1446, explained the new letters and how to use them.
