What 단 means
Before a number, 단 means “only” or “just.”
단 두 개 means “only two.” In longer Korean words, 단 can stand for different Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean): 單 in 단독 (“alone”) and 短 in 단점 (“drawback”). Translate the whole word.
When did Hangul begin?
Hangul was created in 1443.
Hangul was explained in Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the script, in 1446. It made Korean writing accessible to people who did not know Chinese characters. Earlier practices—Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal—adapted Chinese characters to write Korean.
Before a count, 단 adds neutral emphasis; it is not slang.
In compounds, translate the whole word: 단 does not always mean “only.”

2Questions people ask
1Why does 단 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
