What 딴 means

It marks something as different from what is in view.

Before a noun, 딴 can mean “another,” “different,” or “unrelated”: 딴 사람 is “another person,” and 딴 길 is “a different route.”

Hangul is the writing system used for Korean. The 15th-century Hunminjeongeum, a text introducing the system, explains that it was devised for writing Korean; 딴 is built from ㄸ, ㅏ, and ㄴ.

Neutral in ordinary use; 딴 이야기 can sound like a brush-off when someone redirects the conversation.

1

Why does 딴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
