hangul syllable ddang

Hangul Syllable Ddang

2374/11172

땅 (ttang) is the Korean word for land and ground. In context it can mean soil underfoot, homeland or territory, or property for sale. On its own in a chat, it is Korean text to translate, not an emoji reaction.

What 땅 means

The sentence decides: ground, territory, property, or footing.

In a physical description, 땅 (ttang) is the land and ground underfoot, including soil. With a country, hometown, or region, it can mean territory or that place; in buying, farming, or building talk, it means a plot of property. The fixed phrase 설 땅 points to social or professional footing.

The word predates the modern block. An older spelling is attested in the 1447 Seokbo sangjeol, a Buddhist biography text, and the modern form is first recorded in the seventeenth century. That change is an evolution of Korean spelling, not a computer-era invention.

Hangul was designed in 1443 and explained in 1446 to make Korean easier to write for people shut out by Chinese-character literacy. So 땅 spells a spoken Korean word inside the syllable-block system; it does not draw the earth as a picture.

What does 땅 mean when someone sends it?

By itself, it names land or ground in Korean.

Do not read a lone 땅 as a reaction glyph. If the sender writes Korean, use the rest of the sentence to choose between soil, homeland, a plot, or an idiom such as regret. If you cannot read Korean, ask for the sentence rather than guess a hidden slang meaning.

Neutral Korean vocabulary; without Korean around it, a standalone 땅 is opaque rather than expressive.

땅 an emoji? No—send it only when the recipient can read Korean or the surrounding text supplies the meaning.

Drift: A 2020 Korean language article describes 땅값 in a historical newspaper corpus as tied to development and investment, giving the noun a property-market register in public language.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 땅 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
