hangul syllable ddanh

Hangul syllable ddanh

2359/11172

On a standard Korean 2-set keyboard, type 딶 with ShiftE, K, S, G; the Korean input method editor (IME) combines them into ㄸ ㅏ ㄶ. 딶 is one Hangul syllable block, so its role and tone depend on the Korean word and sentence around it.

What 딶 means

Enter the Hangul letters in order with a Korean IME.

On the standard Korean 2-set keyboard (Dubeolsik), press ShiftE, K, S, G. Those keys enter ㄸ ㅏ ㄴ ㅎ; the IME joins the final ㄴ ㅎ as ㄶ and composes 딶. An IME is the input software that assembles Hangul letters into syllable blocks.

While you type, the IME may show changing partial blocks as the syllable takes shape. As of 2026, apps vary in how they display separately entered Hangul jamo, the letters that combine into blocks; some leave them uncombined instead of showing one precomposed syllable.

What does 딶 mean?

딶 is one Korean syllable block, not a translation by itself.

Its written structure is ㄸ ㅏ ㄶ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant. That tells you how the block is built; the word and sentence around it tell you what it means.

Hangul was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 to make Korean easier to write and learn. Earlier ways of writing Korean, including Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, adapted Chinese characters to Korean words and grammar. Hangul's public status changed across 1894–1910: it became official in 1894, lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910, and later returned to everyday public writing. 딶 is one block in that writing system.

What does 딶 mean when sent alone?

A lone 딶 gives you one syllable, not enough context to read the sender's tone.

Read it as a Korean syllable first. If it arrives without surrounding words, ask what word or sentence it belongs to before assigning it a message-specific meaning.

Neutral as a Korean syllable; its tone comes from the word and sentence around it.

A lone 딶 cannot tell you the sender's tone; ask for the surrounding Korean.

Why does my Korean keyboard show changing blocks?

The Korean IME builds a syllable as you type, so the visible block can change before the full sequence is complete.
