What does 뚫 mean in Korean?

By itself, 뚫 is a syllable, not a complete word. In a word such as 뚫다, it contributes the idea of piercing through; the full verb also means to clear a blockage or break through an obstacle.

A recorded Middle Korean form of 뚫다 dates to 1463. Hangul groups beginning, middle, and ending sounds into syllable blocks. Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining the writing system, has a first record dated 1443 and an explanatory book published in 1446. Later spellings lead toward modern 뚫다; Korean dictionaries also record regional forms.

Grammar changes the action around it: 뚫리다 is the passive form, “be pierced,” while 막다 means “block” and is an antonym. The full word decides whether the sense is piercing, unblocking, or overcoming an obstacle.
