What 똶 means

It is a Hangul syllable block; its word meaning depends on context. Korean writing groups a starting consonant, vowel, and optional ending consonant cluster into blocks. This one combines ᄄ, ᅪ, and ᆱ. Those parts describe the syllable’s structure; they are not a word definition.

Hangul, the writing system used for Korean, was completed under King Sejong in 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript, a book announcing the alphabet and explaining its letters, introduced the script. In the ancient period, Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol used Chinese characters in different ways to write Korean or show how to read Chinese texts in Korean. These earlier writing practices are not components of this syllable.

In 1894, Joseon made Hangeul an official script. In 1910, Japanese colonial rule began and authorities officially banned Korean and Hangeul, though their use continued. From 1945, public education and campaigns restored Hangeul as a foundation of Korean culture.

How to type 똶

Use a Korean input method and enter the parts in syllable order. With a Korean input method editor, enter ㄸ, then ㅘ, then ㄹ and ㅁ; the editor combines the last two consonants into the ending ㄻ.

The decomposed sequence is 똶. If software requires one precomposed character, normalize it to NFC (Normalization Form C). As you continue typing, a Korean input method may also reassign a consonant from the end of one syllable to the start of the next.

Why does 똶 look wrong?

A font or app may lack the glyph or Hangul shaping support. A precomposed syllable should display as one block. A blank or boxed replacement means the font or app cannot display it; the box is not part of the character. If 똶 stays split into pieces, the app may not apply the shaping needed to join them.

Plain Korean text; its tone depends on the word and sentence around it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 똶 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
