Hangul syllable Ddyelm

On a Korean keyboard, enter ㄸ ㅖ ㄻ; on the Dubeolsik two-set layout, press ShiftE, ShiftP, F, then A. 뗾 is a Hangul syllable block, so alone it gives little clue to the sender’s intent. Its final ㄻ is a two-consonant ending.

What 뗾 means

Enter ㄸ ㅖ ㄻ in a Korean input method (IME).

On Dubeolsik, the standard two-set Korean keyboard layout, press ShiftE, ShiftP, F, then A. The shifted keys make ㄸ and ㅖ; F followed by A builds final ㄻ. Keep the sequence in one composition so the IME commits one syllable block.

What does 뗾 mean in Korean?

It is a Hangul syllable block, not a message by itself.

Hangul builds syllables from small letter units called jamo. This block combines initial ㄸ, vowel ㅖ, and final ㄻ; a Korean word or name supplies the meaning. If it arrives alone, ask for context.

The earliest surviving account dates Hangul’s creation to 1443; its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, was completed in 1446. It gave people in Joseon, the Korean kingdom of that period, a systematic way to write Korean, with each syllable built from an initial consonant, a vowel, and an optional final consonant.

The script has also been called Hunminjeongeum, eonmun, gukmun, and Hangeul. South Korea uses Hangeul and North Korea uses Chosŏn'gŭl for the same script; neither name changes this block’s reading.

Why does 뗾 look different in fonts?

Unicode can represent the same Hangul syllable in composed or decomposed form.

Unicode treats this precomposed block and a sequence of its separate jamo as equivalent forms of the same text. Korean text software arranges jamo in a syllable cell, while typefaces can shift their shapes or spacing. An app may show components separately before the IME commits them or when it does not shape a decomposed sequence; that display alone does not change the syllable.

Neutral inside Korean text; a lone block is hard to decode without Korean or Hangul-focused context.

As a reaction, a lone 뗾 gives too little context; treat it as Korean text or ask the sender.

Why does 뗾 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
