hangul syllable degg

Hangul syllable Degg

1907/11172

덲 is a Korean Hangul syllable, and its meaning depends on the word or text where it appears. It joins three letters—ㄷ, ㅔ and ㄲ—into one block, which a Korean input method can assemble in that order.

What 덲 means

Alone, 덲 does not name a fixed Korean word. It is a precomposed Hangul block: ㄷ is the initial consonant, ㅔ the vowel and ㄲ the final consonant. In Korean text, the surrounding word determines what the syllable contributes.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, was devised in 1443; its principles were explained in Hunminjeongeum, a book published in 1446. Consonants and vowels were designed to be assembled into syllable blocks for writing Korean speech.

Earlier methods such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to record Korean. Modern Hangul spelling follows a proposal from 1933, partly revised in 1988; these are spelling dates, not the origin date of the script.

How do I type 덲?

Enter the three jamo in order. A Korean input method editor (IME) combines initial ㄷ, vowel ㅔ and final ㄲ into one syllable block.

Unicode can represent the same syllable as one precomposed character or as separate, conjoining jamo (letters). Text processing may expose the parts; Unicode NFC normalization can compose them when software requires the single-block form.

Hangul typefaces position the parts according to their roles as first consonant, middle vowel and final consonant, so spacing and proportions can vary. Some mechanized and digital Hangul designs let parts project beyond the traditional square block.

Neutral as Korean text; isolated, it reads like a syllable sample rather than a complete message.

Do not read “degg” as an English translation; it is a Unicode-style label for the syllable's parts.

Questions people ask

Why does 덲 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
