What 덽 means

Read it as part of the surrounding Korean word.

“Delt” is not a Korean word or pronunciation guide. Unicode generates the English label from the block’s underlying Hangul jamo: ᄃ, ᅦ and ᆴ. They represent an initial ㄷ, vowel ㅔ and one final cluster made from ㄹ+ㅌ.

The new alphabet was announced in 1443 and presented in the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum (“The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People”). Before Hangul, people wrote Korean with Chinese characters and systems that adapted them to Korean, including Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal; these were hard to learn. Hangul was designed to make reading and writing Korean easier to learn. Over time, it appeared in Buddhist and Confucian books, practical and legal writing, personal writing, and official records. 덽 is one syllable block in this writing system, not a separately invented sign.

Questions people ask

2

Is Delt a Korean word?

No. It is the generated English Unicode label for this block, not a word someone would use in a Korean sentence.

Why did my keyboard leave separate jamo?

Your Korean input method may be entering letters without composing syllable blocks. A sequence of separate modern Hangul jamo should still display as one block in a compatible app and font.
