hangul syllable deon

Hangul Syllable Deon

1881/11172

In Korean, 던 is usually the ending -던: it points back to something remembered as ongoing, habitual, or unfinished. By itself, it is normally a fragment, not a reaction emoji or a complete message. Its useful meaning comes from the word or ending around it, not from the glyph alone.

Text symbol

What 던 means

It marks a recalled past action or state. In forms such as 먹던 (“was eating” or “used to eat”) and 가던 (“was going” or “used to go”), -던 presents the past as ongoing, repeated, or interrupted. It is a grammatical ending, so the surrounding stem and noun do the rest of the work.

Hangul’s documented early milestones are 1443, when King Sejong created the system, and 1446, when Hunminjeongeum explained its purpose and principles. It was made to write Korean more accessibly than the Chinese-character methods then in use. The sources checked for this page establish no single first attestation for 던, and no cross-cultural symbolic meaning, as of 2026; its history follows Korean grammar and the script.

Why is 던 different from 은?

It frames the past as remembered process, not just finished fact. Compare 먹은 밥 (“rice I ate”), 먹던 밥 (“rice I was eating or used to eat”), and 먹었던 밥 (“rice I ate back then, completed”). The forms differ in completion and viewpoint, not simply in how long ago the event happened.

The closest relatives are concrete: Unicode’s Hangul model composes a block from a leading consonant, vowel, and final consonant, so 던 may appear in decomposed text as 던. Grammatically, -던 is linked with -더- and -(으)ㄴ, but Korean scholarship disagrees about whether it is a separate morpheme or a noun-modifying form of -더-.

Neutral Korean grammar; it marks a speaker’s framing of the past, not a special online tone.

If someone sent only 던, do not translate it as a complete reaction.

Questions people ask

3

is 던 a word by itself?

Usually no. It is normally an ending attached to a Korean stem; a lone 던 needs surrounding text before you translate it.

is 던 the same as 었던?

No. 던 leaves the past ongoing, habitual, or interrupted; 었던 presents it as completed and distinctly recalled.

why does 던 look different in some text?

It can. A system may show the equivalent jamo sequence 던 instead of the precomposed block 던; that is a representation difference, not a different symbol.
