What 득 means
Romanized deuk, 득 joins ㄷ, ㅡ, and final ㄱ. Korean ㅡ has no exact English match; try the vowel in “good” without rounding your lips.
In 이득 and 소득, 득 means benefit or income; 득점 uses it for points. 득템 began as game slang for wanted items; by 2021 it also described lucky purchases of scarce goods.
Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean easier to read than Chinese-character adaptations; a 1446 publication explained its principles. Older systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean.
