Hangul Syllable Do

1989/11172

도, romanized as do, is a Korean syllable. Attached to a word as a grammatical particle, it means “too,” “also,” or “even”; inside other words, its meaning varies. If someone sends 나도, read it as “me too”—not an emoji.

What 도 means

It adds or emphasizes the word it attaches to. In negative sentences, the Korean do particle can mean “either.” The syllable also appears in words for degree, moral way, or administrative province.

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is first recorded in 1443. The Hunminjeongeum, an explanatory book published in 1446, describes this writing system designed for Korean speech.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 도 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
