What 둦 means
It represents one Korean syllable. The block combines ㄷ (initial consonant), ㅜ (vowel), and ㅈ (final consonant). Unicode’s “duj” label follows those components; in Korean, syllable-final ㅈ ends like a closed t, with no vowel after it.
Hangul was created in 1443; its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음), appeared in 1446. It addressed the limits of older Korean writing methods that adapted Chinese characters, including Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Fonts may change the parts’ proportions and placement without changing the syllable.
