What 둘 means

A Korean word for the quantity two.

An 1103 Korean record, Gyerim yusa, supports the earlier form *tuβur for “two.” The Buddhist text Seokbo sangjeol, in the Korean alphabet, was completed in 1447; later commentary has 둘ㅎ and 둘.

When do I use 둘, 두, or 이?

The number system and counting word decide.

In native counting, 둘 becomes 두 before a word for what is counted: 두 개 (“two items”), 두 사람 (“two people”). The other set uses 이 for dates, money, minutes, addresses and phone numbers.

Why does 둘 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
