What 둣 means
It is a context-bound historical spelling, not a standalone symbol.
As of 2026-09-08, the reviewed sources do not establish a first-ever attestation; the earliest dated example verified here is in 번역노걸대, dated 1517 in the study. It analyzes 둣 as the form produced when the verb stem 두- combines with the perfective marker -앗/엇-, before -다가. In modern wording, the sequence is 두었다가: “set it aside, then …”.
A late 17th century recipe preserves 둣다가 in its original text and translates the instruction as 두었다가. So read the syllable as an old spelling inside a verb phrase, not a name, mood, or internet reaction. It fits Hangul’s combinatory design: consonants and vowels join into syllable units for writing Korean, and 둣 is one output of that system, not a separately invented sign.
Is 둣 the old spelling of 듯?
No — not in the evidence that survives.
Modern Korean dictionaries trace 듯 to the older form ᄃᆞᆺ and define it for resemblance or supposition: “as if,” “seemingly,” or “apparently.” The historical 둣 in 둣다가 is instead analyzed from 두- plus a perfective form, so the two syllables are not interchangeable.
A 1927 orthography survey preserves 둣 in 可할 둣 함니다, while also noting that its contributors used non-uniform spellings. Read that as historical variation or a source-specific form, not as a modern replacement for 듯.
Historical and source-specific: its meaning comes from the surrounding word or phrase, not from the character alone.
Do not replace modern 듯 with 둣 unless you are quoting a historical source.
