hangul syllable dyeot

Hangul syllable dyeot

1958/11172

In a Korean IME, type ㄷ, ㅕ, and ㅌ in sequence to form 뎥. It is one Hangul syllable block, not a word or reaction; inside a Korean word, its role depends on that word. The single block on screen is assembled from three smaller Hangul letters.

What 뎥 means

Use a Korean IME and enter the three jamo in order.

Start with ㄷ, add ㅕ, and finish with ㅌ; the IME joins them into one block. On the Dubeolsik two-set keyboard, press e, u, and x in that order.

What is 뎥 made of?

It is one Hangul syllable block made from three letters.

In order, ㄷ is the starting consonant, ㅕ the vowel, and ㅌ the ending consonant. These small Hangul letters are called jamo. Unicode encodes the combined block as one character, though fonts can draw it in different ways.

Why does Hangul group letters into blocks?

Hangul was designed to write Korean in grouped syllable units.

The first recorded notice of the new Korean writing system, Hunminjeongeum, dates to 1443; an explanatory book under that name followed in 1446. Earlier methods called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal used Chinese characters to write Korean and were difficult to use widely.

Hangul spread through religious, practical, literary, and personal writing. It became official in 1894 and lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910. These shifts changed the script’s public role, not the separate meaning of this syllable.

Neutral as a character; it does not mark a tone or reaction by itself.

Do not infer the sender’s mood from a bare 뎥.

Why is 뎥 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
