Text symbol

What 듃 means

It names the syllable’s parts, not what it means.

Hangul groups jamo—consonant and vowel letters—into one block. Here the Unicode parts are initial ᄃ, vowel ᅲ and final cluster ᆪ.

How did Hangul begin?

It was created to make Korean writing easier.

King Sejong commissioned Hangul in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a text explaining the script, appeared in 1446. It offered an easier way to write Korean than earlier methods using Chinese characters, including Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal. Hangul later appeared alongside Chinese characters before becoming Korea’s national script.
