What 얾 means
It turns 얼다 (“to freeze”) into a noun-like form.
The stem 얼- takes the ending -ㅁ, which lets a verb act as a noun; here it means freezing or becoming frozen. 얼음 is a separate Korean word for ice.
Hangul was devised in 1443, and an explanatory Hunminjeongeum text followed in 1446. Earlier ways of writing Korean, such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal, adapted Chinese characters; Hangul instead represents Korean sounds with its own letters.
How do you type 얾?
A Korean keyboard combines four Hangul letters into one syllable. Enter ㅇ, ㅓ, ㄹ, then ㅁ; the input method joins the last two as the final cluster ㄻ.
Unicode can also store 얾 as a sequence of jamo that normalizes to the same precomposed syllable. Until that text-normalization step, the internal sequence can differ even when it looks the same.
A Korean grammatical form used when a sentence treats the action of 얼다 as a noun.
For “ice,” use 얼음; 얾 is the noun form of 얼다.
