What 얹 means
It is the syllable used in 얹다, the Korean verb “to put something on top.”
얹어 is a conjugated form, and 얹히다 is its passive counterpart. The pronunciation [언따] follows Korean sound rules: ㄵ is heard as ㄴ before ㄷ, and ㄷ becomes tense ㄸ. The romanization eonda and Unicode name spelling eonj describe spelling, not that spoken sound.
Hangul was devised in 1443; Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People (훈민정음), a guide to its principles and use, was published in 1446. The 1447 Korean poem Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven (용비어천가) praises the founding of Joseon and preserves an older form of 얹다 in a verse where a snake sets a magpie on a branch.
How do I type 얹?
Use a Korean two-set IME and type d-j-s-w.
The keys d, j, s, w correspond to ㅇ, ㅓ, ㄴ, ㅈ; the IME joins the last two into final ㄵ.
The Unicode decomposition of 얹 is ᄋ ᅥ ᆬ: an initial letter, vowel, and final consonant cluster. Decomposed text (Unicode NFD) stores these Hangul letters separately; without Hangul shaping, an app may display the pieces apart instead of as one syllable block.
