What 으 means
Use Korean 2-set input: press D, then M.
On the standard Korean 2-set QWERTY layout, D enters ㅇ and M enters ㅡ. With Korean input active, the input method joins those keystrokes into one syllable block; with Latin input active, D and M do not produce 으.
What does 으 mean?
Its meaning depends on the Korean word or sentence around it.
으 is one syllable in Korean writing, so its role comes from how it appears in a word or sentence. If it arrives by itself, the surrounding conversation helps clarify what the sender meant.
Hangul's vowel shapes had a design logic
Hangul was deliberately designed to represent Korean speech with letters arranged in syllable blocks. Its design and explanatory book are dated to 1443 and 1446, respectively.
In the original vowel design, ㅡ represented the flat earth; an old dot above or below it formed the ancestors of ㅗ and ㅜ. During Middle Korean, ㅡ participated in vowel harmony, a pattern linking vowels within a word. That system later weakened, and sound changes erased some earlier contrasts.
Neutral as written Korean; any tone comes from the word or sentence around it.

1Why does 으 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
