What 을 means
It marks a verb’s object after a consonant-ending noun. After a vowel-ending noun, use 를.
Hangul, the Korean writing system, was created in the middle of the 15th century to fit Korean sounds; earlier writing used Chinese characters. Some 19th-century correspondence used -을 after vowel-final syllables.
Unicode also encodes the syllable as three joined Hangul jamo (consonant and vowel letters); fonts may arrange them differently.
Casual Korean can omit 을/를 when context makes the object clear; omission alone does not make a sentence wrong.

1Why does 을 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
