What 값 means
It means price or value, depending on context. It can name a market price, payment, wage, mathematical value, or worth; 기름값 means “fuel cost.”
Hangul was completed in 1443 and explained in 1446 to write Korean sounds in syllable blocks. The earliest attestation cited for 값 is in Seokbo sangjeol, 1447. In 15th-century records, 값 and 빋 overlap; the evidence points to 값 as selling price and 빋 as buying price.
Why is 값 pronounced 갑?
The final ㅄ changes with its position. Alone, 값 is [갑]; before 이, ㅅ carries over and 값이 is [갑씨]. Write the stable forms 값 and 값이 even though their sounds differ.
