hangul syllable gae

Hangul syllable gae

29/11172

개 is the ordinary Korean word for “dog,” though grammar can make it a counter for separate objects or an intensifier before an adjective. Used of a person, the dog word is an insult. The dog word changed over centuries, while Hangul organizes its letters into syllable blocks.

What 개 means

It can name a dog, count objects, or intensify an adjective. By itself, 개 is the ordinary Korean word for a dog. After a number, it serves as the general counter for separate things: 세 개 means “three things.” These are different Korean words with the same spelling and sound; the surrounding grammar tells you which one it is. The counter is linked to Sino-Korean 個, meaning an individual or item.

Aimed at a person, the dog word is an insult, not a pet name.

Why does 개 mean 'very'?

Before an adjective, 개- adds rough, casual emphasis. 개맛있다 means “extremely tasty.” This can sound coarse and is a poor fit for neutral or formal Korean. Dictionaries also record prefix senses involving wildness, poor quality, uselessness, or resemblance, so every use does not simply mean “very.”

Colloquial examples such as 개맛있다 and 개웃기다 appear in a 2025 National Institute of Korean Language language-advice answer. That records usage, not when the prefix first appeared.

The dog word evolved; Hangul was designed

The dog word predates its modern spelling. A Chinese text called Jilin leishi uses 家稀 to transcribe an ancestor of the word in 1103. The Korean work Worin cheon'gangjigok records the older form 가히 in 1449; the shorter spelling 개 appears in the 16th century after h was lost.

Hangul was created in 1443 as a writing system for Korean, and its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, was published in 1446. A Hangul syllable block combines consonant ㄱ and vowel ㅐ; the same block can therefore appear in different Korean words.

The dog noun and object counter are neutral; the intensifier is rough-casual, and the person-directed dog word is insulting.

Aimed at a person, 개 is an insult, not a pet name.

Why does 개 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
