What 갲 means
Switch to Korean 2-set input, then press r, o, w.
The standard Korean 2-set keyboard, also called Dubeolsik, maps r to ㄱ, o to ㅐ, and w to ㅈ. The input method assembles them into one block; if English input is active, the same keys produce Latin letters instead.
What does 갲 mean by itself?
It is one Korean syllable; context supplies the word’s meaning.
The block combines ㄱ, an initial consonant, ㅐ, a vowel, and ㅈ, a final consonant. Hangul places the final consonant beneath the other two. A syllable gives you a sound sequence; the Korean word around it tells you what it means.
Hangul’s original name was 훈민정음, meaning “proper sounds for teaching the people.” King Sejong created the script in 1443, and a book with that name published in 1446 explained its purpose and principles. Before 1443, Korean writers used Chinese characters and Korean-specific ways to adapt them. The name 한글 began appearing in the early 1910s and was widely used by 1928. Today, Hangul is the main writing system for Korean.
Neutral and language-specific: it belongs in Korean writing, Hangul study, or input testing.
