hangul syllable gebs

Hangul syllable gebs

159/11172

In Korean writing, 겞 joins ㄱ, ㅔ, and the compound final ㅄ into one Hangul syllable block. The final follows Korean pronunciation rules, and by itself the block does not tell you a word or reaction. A Korean IME can assemble it from its component letters.

What 겞 means

By itself, 겞 is a spelling unit, not a complete Korean word. It joins three Hangul letters, called jamo: ᄀ is the initial consonant (keyboard form ㄱ), ᅦ the vowel (ㅔ), and ᆹ the final consonant cluster (ㅄ). The ㅄ ending follows Korean pronunciation rules, so this isolated block has no fixed everyday reading.

Hangul, first called Hunminjeongeum, was devised by King Sejong in 1443 so Korean could be written without relying on Chinese characters. In 1446, a book also called Hunminjeongeum explained the script’s purpose and design.

Hangul spread alongside Chinese-character writing through Buddhist scriptures, everyday labels, and practical books. It became Korea’s official national writing system in 1894.

How do you type 겞?

Enter the Korean letters in order with a Hangul IME. Type ㄱ, ㅔ, ㅂ, then ㅅ; a compatible Korean IME combines ㅂ and ㅅ into final ㅄ and makes 겞.

A Hangul syllable block groups an initial consonant, a vowel, and an optional final into one square unit. Here, the final is the compound ㅄ.

겞 is text, not an emoji. Its displayed shape comes from the active Hangul font.

Neutral in Korean writing; opaque when isolated from a word.

Don't infer a message reaction from an isolated text block.

2

How is the ㅄ ending pronounced in 겞?

It depends on its position in a word: at a word edge, ㅄ is normally heard as a closed ㅂ-type ending; before a vowel, ㅅ can carry into the next syllable, with Korean sound rules shaping the result.

Why does 겞 look different in different fonts?

Fonts draw the same encoded Hangul block in their own styles. The difference is typographic; the character keeps the same components.
