A 1447 source cites 걷다 in Seokbo sangjeol, a Hangul Buddhist translation made for a royal memorial. Hangul was created in 1443 and documented in 1446. As of 2026, I found no evidence that 걷 gained a separate symbolic meaning.
Why does 걷 become 걸어?
ㄷ changes to ㄹ before vowel endings.
The walking verb keeps 걷- in 걷는 and 걷습니다, but uses 걸- in 걸어 and 걸으니. That is grammar, not a typo.
