What 건 means
Alone, 건 has no fixed translation. Its romanized form is geon; in a Korean word, it is one syllable, and the whole word supplies the meaning. A contraction such as 이건 comes from 이것은 (“as for this”); that sense belongs to the phrase, not 건 alone.
Hangul was created to write Korean speech. Its key dates are 1443 and 1446: the script’s first record and explanatory book. These date Hangul, not 건. Its blocks can resemble hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), but Hangul letters were not directly derived from them.
The block combines ㄱ, ㅓ and final ㄴ. Fonts may space these strokes differently without changing the character.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 건 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
